Vaccinations Autumn 2026

Please note that the eligibility criteria to get a Covid vaccine has changed from previous Autumn campaigns, so please check to see if you are eligible before booking or you may be turned away. COVID-19 is more serious in older people and in people with certain underlying health conditions, therefore people falling within the following criteria are being offered an additional Covid vaccine this Autumn:

• People aged 75 years and over
• People aged between 18 and 64 years who are Immunosuppressed, Click here for specific criteria.
• Care home residents

Influenza is more serious in older people and in people with certain underlying health conditions. For this reason, people falling within the following criteria are being offered a vaccine this Autumn:

• People aged 65 years and over
• People aged between 18 and 64 years who are clinically at risk (see below)
• People with lowered immunity
• All pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy
• People living in a residential or nursing home
• Carers
• Frontline health or social care workers

Clinically at risk groups include:

• a heart problem
• a chest complaint or serious breathing difficulties, including bronchitis, emphysema or some people with asthma (needing a steroid inhaler or tablets)
• a kidney disease
• lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment)
• liver disease
• a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA)
• diabetes
• some neurological condition, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) or cerebral palsy
• a learning disability
• a problem with your spleen, such as sickle cell disease, or you have had your spleen removed
• being seriously overweight (BMI>40)

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) mostly causes cold-like symptoms, but some groups such as the elderly and very young children can experience more serious infections. For this reasons people falling within the following groups are being offered the RSV vaccine:

• • Everyone age 75 years and older. This is because older adults are more at risk of serious complications from RSV. There is no upper age limit.
  • People aged 65 to 74 who have a weakened immune system or have a long term lung condition (not including asthma that is under control) are also now eligible.
  • People living in care homes for older adults. This is because of the risk of serious RSV outbreaks. Most residents will already be eligible because of their age, but adults younger than 75 but living in a care home for older adults are also eligible.
  • you’re 28 weeks pregnant or more – the vaccine is recommended during every pregnancy to help protect your baby after they’re born

Whooping cough (pertussis) rates have risen recently. Babies who are too young to start their vaccinations are at greatest risk.

Whooping cough can be serious for babies and may lead to complications resulting in hospitalisation and even death.

Pregnant women can help protect their babies by getting vaccinated.

You should usually have the whooping cough vaccine around the time of your mid-pregnancy scan (usually at 20 weeks pregnant), but you can have it from 16 weeks.

To help give the best protection to your baby, you should have the vaccine before 32 weeks. If you miss out, you can still have the vaccine later.

Why the NHS is offering you MenB vaccinations

MenB can cause meningitis, where the membranes surrounding the brain or spine become inflamed. This can lead to brain damage.  If MenB enters the blood, it can cause septicaemia (blood poisoning) which can damage the body’s tissues and organs. It can also cause sepsis, a life-threatening reaction to an infection.

Some people carry MenB bacteria in their nose or throat without becoming ill. It can spread through close and regular contact such as sneezing, coughing, kissing or sharing food or drinks when people live or socialise closely together, including at universities.

Vaccination is the most effective protection. Read more in your NHS App or at www.nhs.uk/meningitis.

• Who is eligible?Free NHS MenB vaccinations will be available from 20^th July 2026 if you were:
  • Born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008, or
  • Born on or after 21st July 2001 and are starting university for the first time in autumn, or
  • Born on or after 21st July 2001 and are starting some residential further education colleges for the first time in autumn 2026 as a residential student

  When you go for your vaccinations, staff may ask which of these groups you are in.  Please have your offer of a college or university place with you to show them.
