If you have old medications laying around that you no longer use or are out of date, instead of flushing them down the loo or putting them in your household waste, you can return them to the Pharmacy for safe disposal. Incorrect disposal of medication can be harmful to the environment, in particular to local plant life, animals and water sources, so it is important to get rid of them safely.
Most medications, such as tablets, capsules and inhalers, can be taken by us whether they were bought or dispensed here, no questions asked. We can accept medication from individuals or households, which include residential homes and charity-run hospices, though not nursing homes. For safety reasons, we cannot accept hazardous chemicals or sharps (i.e. needles), these may be taken back by your local council or you can check with your GP practice.
When you return medication to us, a member of staff will have a quick look to see if any of the medications being returned are Controlled Drugs, or CDs, such as Morphine. If this is the case, we will fill out a short form which will require your signature in order to keep an accurate record of the quantity and type of CD being returned. Please make the member of staff aware of anything that you are returning which may affect the health and safety of our staff.
If you have any questions about this process, or whether we can take the medicines you wish to return, please feel free to contact us before coming to the pharmacy.
